Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

If you love sloppy joes but want to take them up a notch, this Texas Toast Sloppy Joe recipe is for you. Instead of using regular hamburger buns, this version piles the rich, saucy beef filling on thick slices of garlic-butter Texas toast. It’s messy, cheesy, and absolutely satisfying — the perfect comfort food for busy weeknights or game day dinners.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 box frozen garlic Texas toast (8 slices)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook beef filling: In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic; cook until softened.
  2. Simmer sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer uncovered for 8–10 minutes until thickened.
  3. Bake toast: While the beef simmers, bake Texas toast according to package directions until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble sloppy joes: Spoon beef mixture generously over each slice of Texas toast. Top with shredded cheese.
  5. Melt cheese: Place assembled toasts on a baking sheet and return to the oven for 3–4 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Enjoy hot with a side salad, fries, or coleslaw.

Tips & Variations

  • Add jalapeños or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Swap beef for ground sausage for a richer flavor.
  • Use pepper jack cheese for a Tex-Mex twist.
  • Make it a casserole version: layer Texas toast, sloppy joe filling, and cheese in a baking dish, then bake until bubbly.

Enjoy !!
