Ingredients

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

For the Topping

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Sesame seeds or nigella seeds (optional)

Preparation

Activate the Yeast

In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast.

Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.


Make the Dough

Add the egg, oil, and salt to the yeast mixture and stir.

Gradually add flour while mixing until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic.


Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.


Shape the Rolls

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.

Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place on a parchment-lined baking tray.

Cover and let them rise again for 20 minutes.


Add the Topping

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Mix egg yolk with milk and brush over the tops of the rolls.

Sprinkle sesame seeds if desired.


Bake

Bake for 18–20 minutes until the rolls are golden brown.

Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
