This vintage recipe comes straight out of old-school Betty Crocker cookbooks. It’s a clever way to turn everyday cheese sandwiches into a hearty casserole, perfect for feeding a family on a budget. With layers of buttered bread, sharp cheese, and a creamy egg mixture, it bakes up golden and bubbly, making it the ultimate nostalgic comfort food.
Ingredients (Serves 6–8)
- 12 slices of sandwich bread (white or whole wheat)
- 6 slices American cheese (or cheddar)
- 3 tablespoons butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard (optional, for flavor)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Paprika (for garnish)
Instructions
- Make sandwiches: Butter each slice of bread lightly. Place cheese between two slices to make 6 sandwiches. Cut sandwiches diagonally into halves or quarters.
- Arrange in dish: Place sandwiches in a greased 9×13-inch casserole dish, layering as needed.
- Prepare custard: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Pour over sandwiches: Evenly pour the egg mixture over the layered sandwiches, making sure everything is soaked.
- Chill (optional): For best texture, cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours (or overnight).
- Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown and set in the middle.
- Serve: Sprinkle lightly with paprika and serve warm.
Tips & Variations
- Add slices of ham, turkey, or cooked bacon inside the sandwiches for extra flavor.
- Use Swiss, Colby-Jack, or sharp cheddar instead of American cheese.
- Mix in sautéed onions or mushrooms with the egg mixture for a savory twist.
- Great for breakfast, brunch, or a comforting dinner.
